Nowadays, blood transfusion is a safe therapeutic treatment, since the donated blood is submitted to a rigorous battery tests that warrant the safeness of the unit previous to its use.

Today, voluntary blood donating consciousness has lost its propulsion in society; and regardless of the donation being the human and social side of the transfusion, we tend to believe that we only have to do it if it is necessary.

It is definitively important to let people know the great therapeutic resource that we have in ourselves, and that each one can offer in a very simple way.

Among the requirements to donate blood, we can list the followings:

•     To be between 18 and 65 years old.
•     Have a clean bill of health.
•     To weight over 110 pounds.
•     To take a blood test before the donation and in that way warrant our donation to help save a life.

The donation of blood is a voluntary altruistic act; nobody should be coerced in any way to donate.

We hope the following points help to clear the issue:

1.    The amount donated only represents 10% of the blood that a person normally has, this value does not interfere with normal functioning of a body.
2.    The blood donation may be done at any time in the day, no special conditions are necessaries.
3.    Blood cannot be fabricated.
4.    If you are thinking of donating when an emergency arise, you are already late.  Your blood must undergo some tests and processing.  Therefore, is better to donate before the necessity arises.
5.    It is not recommended to donate on an empty stomach.
6.    A frequent donor can stop any time he wants, this will not cause any harm on him, since the body is constantly renewing the blood.  Every 120 days, the blood that we have circulating is renewed whether we are donors or not.
7.    The process of blood donating takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
8.    The only pain felt is when you get pinched by the needle to extract the blood and to get the sample for the laboratory tests.
9.    Any person that has suffer from Hepatitis B or C, Cancer, Tuberculosis or Hematological disorders among other specifics conditions that are evaluated and informed by the physician at the Blood Bank, as well as homosexuals individuals, are rejected definitively as a blood donors.
