Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.

Bariatric – Gastric Band
Gastric banding was only approved in the U.S. in 2001 this procedure has been used in Europe for a number of years. In this operation, a small band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch. As with stomach stapling, the small size of the pouch means that you feel full sooner. However, the band can be adjusted in size by inflating or deflating the band; this allows the health professional to adjust the size of the opening between the pouch and the stomach.

Bariatric – Gastric Sleeve
This is a relatively new approach in Bariatric surgery. It is the first component of the duodenal switch surgery and involves removing about two-thirds of the stomach with a stapling device. It can be done laparoscopically but is not reversible. It basically leaves a stomach tube instead of a stomach sack.
